There’s a new kid on Vancouver’s book publishing block: McKellar & Martin Publishing Group, Limited.
Meghan Spong and Tonya Martin are presenting a fresh, new take on the tried-and-true with their brand-new list for Fall 2010!
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, September 1, 2010, McKellar & Martin Publishing Group has opened its doors for business with the launch of their Fall 2010 list.
McKellar & Martin is the ultimate result of Meghan Spong and Tonya Martin’s years in the trade book publishing industry in both Canada and the United States. Spong and Martin met while employed at Raincoast Book Publishing, and had a meeting of minds (and hearts) when it came to the craft of bookmaking and the admiration of honest, well-written, sometimes off-kilter content. “We believe in the pure craftsmanship and art of traditional bookmaking,” says Spong. “The true artistry of bookmaking is being overshadowed, while print-on-demand and desktop publishing flourish. I encourage our
audience to look for subtle details and fine touches in our books.”
Martin agrees, “Bookmakers are artisans. We’re bringing back colophons, and vellum, and foil-stamped cloth cases…but we’re keeping the price point of our books at an affordable level. Parents, teachers, and librarians should never be priced out of our market.”
Spong and Martin also believe in publishing a wide-variety of genres and age levels. They are prone to the beautifully subtle non-fiction titles, such as Amanda Reid-Stevens’s The Canoe He Called Loo Taas (BBB), but are also drawn to the slightly quirky, beautifully illustrated titles like Emily Mullock’s Go Away, Unicorn!
(It should be noted that McKellar & Martin Publishing Group is the new incarnation of Spong’s previous venture BENJAMIN brown books, Ltd. BBB is under the aegis of McK & M, and will house the more “holistic, feel-good” titles.)
McKellar & Martin Publishing Group has two titles planned for Fall 2010: Emily Mullock’s extremely funny picture book, Go Away, Unicorn!, and Joanna Karaplis’s stunning YA debut, Fractured: Happily Never After? 3 Tales, a collection of fractured fairytales for teens. McK&M will also be publishing award-winning authors Julie Burtinshaw, Sean L. Moore, and Richard Van Camp, as well as a title on the All-Native Basketball Tournament
with a Foreword by Governor General Award-winning artist Robert Davidson.
McKellar & Martin Publishing Group is an independent trade publishing house located in Vancouver, British Columbia.
